Soup for a Rainy Day

This past weekend, we smoked 35 pounds of pork shoulder for a 100th birthday celebration. I covered half of the pork in a simple BBQ sauce and left the other half naked. The sauced pork went really fast. I think next time, I’ll sit out several BBQ sauces next to the naked version and allow guests to flavor as they wish.

Food traditions can be as involved as spending days preparing for a special feast or as simple as picking up a bucket of chicken on your way to Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

Take a minute to slow down and think how food has become a tradition in your life and how a simple meal can serve as an opportunity to share stories with family and friends.

We had some French bread left over from dinner last night and some cooked shrimp, so we threw together a quick dipping sauce with ingredients we had around the house.

INGREDIENTS:

1 Shallot, finely chopped
1 Clove Garlic, finely chopped
4 Leaves Basil, chopped
Zest of 1 Orange
Juice of 1 Orange
1/4 Cup Balsamic Vinegar
1 Teaspoon Mustard
1/2 Cup Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper to Taste

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl except for the olive oil. Slowly whisk in olive oil until the sauce thickens.

Serve as a dipping sauce with bread or shrimp or anything else you like to dip. Also makes a yummy salad dressing.

Today, we are very happy to have Bridget join us in the kitchen to make one of my all time favorite desserts, bananas flambe. This is one of the first desserts that I ever learned how to make and it has been a household favorite for many years. It is a very simple dessert to prepare but will wow your guests, if it doesn’t, I’ll come to your next dinner party and prepare it myself.

INGREDIENTS:

2 Tablespoons Butter
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
1 Banana, Sliced
1/8 Cup Rum

DIRECTIONS:

Combine butter and brown sugar over medium high heat until butter and sugar melt into a syrup like consistency.

Add bananas and coat with syrup mixture. Pour in rum and touch to flame. Allow flame to burn and sauce to reduce slightly.

Serve over ice cream.
